48x36in, Acrylic on canvas
My current series, Friends & Family, uses loved ones and sentimental objects as subject matter, applying the refractions technique to evoke an obscure yet specific sense of familiarity. In A&C (Allison and Camille), my sister and a close friend emerge through a grid of fragmented color, their forms broken into warm oranges and reds against deep burgundy, recognizable and abstracted at once. My relationship to each subject shapes every piece, through color, vibrancy, and the degree of clarity or distortion I choose. There is something profound about painting someone you love through a lens of distortion.
